Course Information
Description	Intensive study of and practice in writing processes, from invention and researching to drafting, revising, and editing, both individually and collaboratively. Emphasis on effective rhetorical choices, including audience, purpose, arrangement, and style. Focus on writing the academic essay as a vehicle for learning, communicating, and critical analysis.
Required Textbooks	Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. No textbook required; however, students MUST have access to the internet outside of class in order to read assignments.

Learning Outcomes	Upon successful completion of this course, students will: Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative writing processes. Use Edited American English in academic essays.

Course Policies
Instructor Policies	Late work policy: No late work will be accepted UNLESS you contact me beforehand. If you’re ill or unable to complete your work for any reason, contact me and ask for an extension. Communication is an important skill to develop! Shoot me an email. That being said, I might still grade your work if it is turned in before I catch up on grading. Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. I will give you a zero on your first instance of plagiarism or cheating and further academic penalties might be applied. I am a friendly person who is quite animated. I enjoy getting along with my classes, but I will still fail students even if I like them as people. So please, turn in your work!
Attendance Policy	I will take attendance every class. Shoot me an email if you're missing class, and I will count you excused. I will not count you excused if you do not communicate with me. Being disruptive in class will count as an absence for your Blackboard grade, but for your attendance sheet for your high school, I will mark you present.

COVID 19 Information	The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
HB 2504	This syllabus is part of LSCPA's efforts to comply with Texas House Bill 2504.
Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect	As per Texas law and LSCPA policy, all LSCPA employees, including faculty, are required to report allegations or disclosures of child abuse or neglect to the designated authorities, which may include a local or state law enforcement agency or the Texas Department of Family Protective Services. Title IX and Sexual Misconduct	LSCPA is committed to establishing and maintaining an environment that is free from all forms of sex discrimination, including sexual harassment, sexual violence, and other forms of sexual misconduct.
